16 September 2017House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez delivers the welcome address during the 38th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) held at the Makati Shangrila. Alvarez called for “stronger and collective actions to counter the tide of regional and global challenges that include the spread of violent extremism, tensions resulting from maritime sovereignty disputes, human and drug trafficking.” He also cited the formal establishment of the ASEAN Community at the end of 2015 and the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and its three Community blueprints as part of ASEAN’s commitment to broader regional integration.Delegates come from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Also joining the group are heads of observer delegations from Australia, Canada, Belarus, China, European Parliament, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Russian Federation.
